Natural manganese dioxide (pyrolusite) is an important source of manganese. It is mainly used to make steel and manganese alloy. About 70-80% of the world's production of manganese dioxide is used in the battery industry. According to 1976 statistics, about 500,000 tons of pyrolusite were consumed for this purpose. In dry batteries, carbon is positive and zinc is negative, and manganese dioxide acts as a depolarizer near the carbon pole to prevent the release of hydrogen, possibly through the following reaction: MnO2+H++e- = MnO(OH).

It is mainly used as a depolarizing agent in dry batteries. It is a good decolorizing agent in the glass industry, which can oxidize low price iron salt into high iron salt, and turn the blue green of glass into weak yellow. Used in the electronics industry to produce manganese zinc ferrite magnetic materials. It is used as raw material of iron-manganese alloy in steelmaking industry and heating agent in casting industry. Used as a absorber in gas masks. In the chemical industry, it is used as an oxidant (e.g. rhodopsin synthesis), a catalyst for organic synthesis, and a desiccant for paints and inks. It is also used as an accelerant in the match industry, as a raw material for ceramic, enamel and manganese salt. It is also used in fireworks, water purification, iron removal, medicine, fertilizer and fabric printing and dyeing.
