Sodium silicate, commonly known as water glass, is a water-soluble silicate. Its aqueous solution is called water glass and is a mineral adhesive. Its chemical formula is R2O·nSiO2, where R2O represents the oxide of an alkali metal, and n is the ratio of the molar number of silicon dioxide to that of the alkali metal oxide, which is called the modulus of water glass. The commonly used water glass in construction is the aqueous solution of sodium silicate (Na2O·nSiO2).
Sodium silicate has a very wide range of uses, almost covering every sector of the national economy. It is used in the chemical industry to produce various silicate products such as silica gel, white carbon black, zeolite molecular sieves, sodium pentahydrate, silica sol, layer silicon and instant powdered sodium silicate, potassium sodium silicate, etc. It is the basic raw material of silicon compounds. In economically developed countries, the deep-processed series of products made from sodium silicate as raw material have developed to more than 50 kinds, and some have been applied in high, precise and advanced technological fields. In the light industry, it is an indispensable raw material in detergents such as laundry powder and soap, and also a water softener and sedimentation aid. It is used in the textile industry for auxiliary dyeing, bleaching and sizing. It is widely used in the machinery industry for casting, grinding wheel manufacturing and metal preservatives, etc.
It is used in the construction industry to manufacture quick-drying cement, acid-resistant cement waterproof oil, soil stabilizer, refractory materials, etc. Silicon-based fertilizers can be produced in agriculture. In addition, it is used as a silicon-aluminum catalyst for petroleum catalytic cracking, a filler for soap, an adhesive for corrugated paper, high-temperature resistant materials for laboratory crucibles, metal preservatives, water softeners, detergent auxiliaries, refractory materials and ceramic raw materials, bleaching, dyeing and sizing materials for textiles, mineral processing in mines, waterproofing, leak sealing, wood fire prevention, food preservation, and for making adhesives, etc.
