This product is a colorless and transparent needle-like or prismatic crystal, or a white crystalline powder. The crystals vary in length, approximately 3cm in length and 0.3cm in diameter. They are easily broken when pinched by hand. It has a minty aroma, with a initially hot and then cool taste. The best ones are colorless, transparent and have a strong smell. This product is highly soluble in ethanol, chloroform, ether, liquid paraffin or volatile oil, and slightly soluble in water. The melting point is 42 to 44 degrees Celsius.

Menthol, also known as menthol alcohol or menthol ice, is a cyclic terpene alcohol flavoring and fragrance. It appears as colorless needle-like or prismatic crystals or white crystalline powder. It has a special minty aroma, with a burning sensation at first and then a cooling effect. Its ethanol solution shows a neutral reaction. It is highly soluble in ethanol, chloroform, petroleum ether, ether, liquid paraffin or volatile oil, and slightly soluble in water. The molecular structure contains three asymmetric carbon atoms, so it has four stereoisomers, and their aroma intensity and type as well as cooling sensation are different. Commonly, there are two types: natural menthol and synthetic menthol.
