In enamel products, it can make the glaze not easy to fall off and make it shiny. It is also widely used in special optical glass, glass fiber, non-ferrous metal welding agent, jewelry binder, printing and dyeing, washing (silk and wool fabrics, etc.), gold refining, cosmetics, pesticides, fertilizers, borax soap, preservatives, antifreeze and disinfectants for medical purposes. It is also one of the basic raw materials for making other boron compounds, almost all boron-containing compounds can be made by borax, they are widely used in metallurgy, machinery, light industry, textile, electronics, chemical and other sectors.
Borax is the sodium salt of boric acid, the general name of sodium tetraborate, is a mineral containing boron. According to the amount of crystal water, it is divided into three types: borax decahydrate, borax pentahydrate and borax anhydrous.
(1) The chemical name of borax decahydrate is sodium tetraborate decahydrate, molecular formula Na2B4O7·10H2O, molecular weight 381.37. It is colorless translucent crystal or white crystalline powder, odorless, salty, density 1.73g/cm3, melting point 75ºC. It can slowly lose water and weather in dry air. When heated to 300-400ºC, it loses all the crystal water and transforms into anhydrous sodium tetraborate Na2B4O7. Soluble in water and glycerol, insoluble in alcohol. At 878ºC, it melts into a vitreous substance.
(2) The chemical name of borax pentahydrate is sodium tetraborate pentahydrate, molecular formula Na2B4O7·5H2O, molecular weight 291.29, is a white crystalline powder, density 1.815g /cm3, when heated to 122ºC when the loss of crystalline water, into anhydrous sodium tetraborate.
(3) The chemical name of anhydrous borax is sodium tetraborate, molecular formula Na2B4O7, molecular weight 201.22, is a white crystal or vitreous body, there are two forms of α and β : α rhombic crystal, melting point 742.5ºC, density 2.28 g/cm3, β rhombic crystal, melting point 664ºC, density 2.75 g/cm3, strong moisture absorption, soluble in water, can form a concentration of 13-16% solution.
