Calcium oxide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula CaO and is commonly known as quicklime. The physical properties are white powder on the surface. Impure ones are grayish white, and when containing impurities, they appear light yellow or gray. It is hygroscopic. Calcium oxide is an alkaline oxide and is sensitive to moisture. It can easily absorb carbon dioxide and moisture from the air. It reacts with water to form calcium hydroxide (Ca (OH) 2) and generates a large amount of heat, and is corrosive.

Quicklime is generally produced by calcining limestone. Due to its excellent water absorption performance, quicklime has long been used to make desiccants. The main component of quicklime desiccants is calcium oxide, and the drying principle is that calcium oxide absorbs water to form calcium hydroxide. Because of its low cost and high cost performance, it is widely used in various industries such as food and clothing.

It is used as a building material, a metallurgical flux, the main raw material for the production of calcium hydroxide and various calcium compounds, and also a cheap alkali in the chemical industry. It is widely used in the purification of pesticides, papermaking, food, petrochemicals, leather tanning, and wastewater, etc. It can also be used for the drying of  gas in the laboratory and the dehydration of alcohols, etc.
