Adipic acid, also known as fatty acid, is a carboxylic acid organic compound that can be used as a chemical reagent, and is also used in plastics and organic synthesis. It is a white crystalline powder, slightly soluble in water, and acidic when dissolved in water. Adipic acid as a basic component of a variety of chemical products, is by far the most important aliphatic binary carboxylic acid in industrial production, about 3 million tons of adipic acid per year in the world for the synthesis of nylon-66 monomer, in addition, adipic acid is also the synthesis of polyester, polyurethane, lubricants, plasticizers, adipic dinitrile, and food used as a seasoning gels.
It is mainly used as a raw material for nylon 66 and engineering plastics. This is followed by the production of various ester products, which are used as plasticizers and advanced lubricants. In addition, adipic acid is also used as a raw material for polyurethane elastomers, and as an acidifier for various foods and beverages, which sometimes outperforms citric acid and tartaric acid. Adipic acid is also used in medicine, yeast purification, pesticides, adhesives, synthetic leather, synthetic dyes and fragrances.
Adipic acid is the most useful dibasic acid in aliphatic group. Adipic acid has the commonness of aliphatic dibasic acid, including salting reaction, esterification reaction, amidation reaction and so on. The main use of adipic acid is as a raw material for three major categories of products, namely: the synthesis of nylon 66 salt, and then the manufacture of polyamide resins and fibers (nylon 66), nylon 66 is the largest end market for adipic acid; Synthetic polyester polyol for the production of polyester polyurethane; Diester adipate plasticizer. In addition, it can also be used in the production of high-grade lubricants and food additives (acid agents for food and beverage).
