1, 3-butanediol, abbreviated as 1,3-BDO, has the characteristics of good hygroscopicity, odorlessness, low toxicity, good water solubility, etc., and also has the reactivity of diols. It is mainly used for the production of plasticizers, unsaturated polyester resins, industrial dehydrating agents, etc. It can be used as a moisturizer in cosmetics and applied in products such as toner, cream, lotion, gel and toothpaste. It can also be used as a humidifier and softener for textiles, tobacco and paper, as well as an antibacterial agent for cheese or meat, etc.
1, 3-butanediol possesses the reactivity, odorlessness, low toxicity and good water solubility of diols, and can be used in the following main aspects:
Unsaturated polyester produced by blending 1, 3-butanediol or ethylene glycol as raw materials for polyester resins and alkyd resins has excellent water resistance, softness and impact resistance.
2. The polyester-based plasticizer, which is made from 1, 3-butanediol and dibasic acid (adipic acid) as raw materials for plasticizers, features low volatility, migration resistance, soapy water resistance, solvent resistance and oil resistance.
3. As a raw material for polyurethane coatings, when saturated polyester is used as the raw material for polyurethane coatings, the resulting product can achieve good water resistance in the final coating process, which is better than the effect of using other diols.
4. As a wetting agent and softener, 1, 3-butanediol has excellent moisture retention and low toxicity. After being made into esters, it can be used as a wetting and softener for cigarettes, celluloid, vinylon films, paper and fibers, etc.
5. As a solvent for fine chemicals, it can be used in the formulation of toner, ointment, cream and toothpaste, etc.
